Jack and Coke [Dec. 2nd, 2009|11:13 am]

There were two cherries, but when the server handed me the drink, I vacuumed the first one quickly.

The drink was okay, but the second it got warm I was disappointed. I had to suck it down real quick and that made me loopy for the 1.5 hours we were at the restaurant.

I guess its safe to say that this drink is a specialty of ChaCho's in San Antonio, TX

Hop Heads! Need a good IPA Recipe! [Dec. 2nd, 2009|10:40 am]

[heartstuesday]
[Current Location |Orlando, FL]

My boyfriend and I just started home brewing. For Christmas, I want to get him the ingredients for an awesome and VERY hoppy IPA. What I need is a fairly easy recipe for an Imperial or Double IPA. I just started brewing so I am only comfortable with extract and partial mash recipes (all I have done is partial mash kits to date). Plus I need to be able to get all the ingredients at my local home brew in Orlando or in Gainesville, FL. I just ordered a bunch of supplies online and forgot to get this stuff! Thus, I don't want to pay for shipping again and then waiting a week.

If you can shoot me some ideas or tasty recipes, that would be of great help! Thanks in advance!

Strawberry Scones [Dec. 2nd, 2009|11:26 pm]

Warm, light, comforting and perfect for a lazy afternoon alone. These scones were fluffy, with the slight tang of chopped strawberries, balanced off with a serving of sweet strawberry jam on the side :)

Drop by my foodblog for more pictures, and the recipe!

It turns out that you can either have an Epic NaNoWriMo Catchupathon or a Four-Day Weekend Family Holiday Roadtrip and Hug-In, but not both. And by 'you', of course, I mean 'me'. In my defense, I wasn't aware that I was planning on a Family Holiday Roadtrip and Hug-In until sometime last week, so I wasn't really factoring this into my NaNo optimism.

I wasn't terribly upset, to be honest with you. Me and NaNoWriMo 2009, we had some good times, but it was time for both of us to move on. By which I mean that I'm going to move on and my 25,000 word masterpiece is mostly going to stay put. Possibly when I am bored, I will reread it and copypaste any bits of it that are still funny.

Here's some food I made for Thanksgiving dinner!

Butternut squash with browned butter and thyme.

My attempt at pumpkin pie.
I burned the pie (though not as bad as I first thought)
and my finger (worse than I thought.. it still hurts)!

2+ )

On Thursday we had a last minute invite to Brock's brother's for dinner and then after that we already had plans to go to my sister's for dinner. That's what I made the squash and pie for, though no one there really likes squash.. But we do and we loved it! Also, someone else brought a pumpkin pie that looked better than mine (not a hard task, haha) so mine didn't get cut into, but that was fine because then we got to bring it home and enjoy it here. :) Saturday was Thanksgiving with my family at my grandma's house. I made a corn casserole for dinner there, but I was in a great hurry that day, so no pictures of that! Sadly, Brock ended up really sick that day so he didn't get to go. Also, I was sort of mad at him the entire day, due to a misunderstanding, but all was worked out and the day ended well. :)

Hello all! I haven't been around much at all. It was a busy Thanksgiving and then I was very distracted and thoughtful, these past few days especially. Rethinking life and how I want to live it and what I should be accomplishing with it. I'm still pretty distracted. But I thought I should come back and write a little something and I am going to start going through some of my photos and playing catch up with everything. I hope everyone had a lovely holiday and is doing great in general! xoxox.

An attempt at cauliflower and walnut pasta which was overrun with pasta and then saved by lots of cheese. Take a look at my food comic, a wishful pantry for more photos and pasta fail.

Garlic Prawn and Spinach Pasta [Dec. 1st, 2009|02:36 pm]

[vanessafrida]

My latest “thing” is meal in ones on weeknights…mainly pastas but instead of throwing together a salad, I throw in some veggies to the pasta.

I got really lazy, and I didn’t even bother to roast my tomatoes in the oven for the smokey taste. Mainly cos I wanted the garlic flavour to be intense…def not a first date meal unless well…your date is a garlic fiend too…then it is all good!

Dinner was ready in 30 minutes….and it sure hit the spot. I like it that this pasta doesn't involve any wine and instead I used the shells from the prawns to make a stock for the pasta.

Japanese-style scrambled egg rice with tamagoyaki, topped with okaka furikake.

This is something I regularly prepare as a quick food when I can't bother cooking proper dinner.

Sorry for the bright picture and the boring bowl - my flatmates seem to hog my better plates.

Toffee White Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies [Nov. 30th, 2009|11:51 am]

picturing_food

[_buenavista]

I love oatmeal cookies and I think they're perfect for the holiday season. They're very versatile; you can add almost any combination of things to them. I decided that toffee and white chocolate chips pair together really well, so I thought, why not throw them into some oatmeal cookies? The toffee melts a bit while it bakes, mixing in with the rich white chocolate chips and soft, chewy oatmeal cookie base, which has a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. These cookies are absolutely heavenly, believe me! I brought them into work and everyone seemed to enjoy them, and I also gave some to my brother and a friend. They're perfect to mail as a gift, too, because they stay soft for a good amount of time. Start off your holiday season right with these cookies! Recipe on my blog at The Crepes of Wrath or after the cut.
